La Escepción Releases Selectos Reales Edición Regional Italia

Italy’s long-running relationship with rare and unconventional Cuban regional editions is set to continue with the announcement of a new release from Habanos S.A. and Italian distributor Diadema S.p.A.: the La Escepción Selectos Reales Edición Regional Italia.

The upcoming cigar stands apart from most Edición Regional releases because it revives a historic Cuban marque that no longer exists within Habanos S.A.’s regular production portfolio. Rather than selecting an active non-global brand, Italy has once again received permission to utilize the dormant La Escepción name, marking the third time the brand has returned exclusively for the Italian market.

The La Escepción Selectos Reales will be produced in the Campanas vitola, a 140mm x 52 belicoso format recognized by many Cuban cigar enthusiasts from the legendary Bolívar Belicosos Finos. The shape has become one of the most respected and widely used formats within the Edición Regional program due to its combination of concentrated flavor delivery and elegant tapered head.

Although Diadema S.p.A. has not yet finalized pricing or an official release date, packaging shown during the announcement indicates production will consist of 4,000 numbered boxes containing 50 cigars each. That places total production at approximately 200,000 cigars, making it one of the larger La Escepción releases ever produced.

The presentation also revealed unusually elaborate banding for the release. While most Edición Regional cigars carry the traditional secondary red-and-silver regional band, the Selectos Reales appears to feature at least three separate bands, including a commemorative band honoring the 25th anniversary of Diadema S.p.A.. The secondary band uses the wording “Exclusivo Italia,” a designation increasingly seen on modern regional editions in place of the traditional “Edición Regional” text.

The history behind the La Escepción name adds further significance to the project. The brand was originally founded in Cuba by José Gener Batet, the same Spanish-born tobacco entrepreneur responsible for creating the iconic Hoyo de Monterrey marque during the 19th century. La Escepción was eventually discontinued in the late 1980s as Habanos streamlined its portfolio, though the name maintained a cult following among collectors familiar with pre-revolution Cuban cigars.

Italy first revived the brand in 2011 with the La Escepción Selectos Finos Edición Regional Italia, followed by the Don José release in 2015. The new Selectos Reales now becomes the third modern revival of the historic marque for the Italian market.

The Edición Regional program itself has evolved into one of the most collectible segments within the Cuban cigar world. Under the initiative, Habanos S.A. permits official distributors around the globe to commission exclusive cigars using vitolas not currently offered within that brand’s standard production lineup. These releases are often produced in limited quantities and can take years to reach retail shelves after their original announcement.

Italy, however, has historically taken a more creative approach to the program than many other distributors. Diadema S.p.A. has repeatedly introduced unique packaging and presentation concepts for its regional editions, including gold foil-wrapped Punch cigars, alternate-colored cigar bands, and even Ramón Allones releases packaged in decorative glass jars.

The only comparable exception within the Edición Regional program may be Mexico’s now-retired Edmundo Dantesseries, which was reportedly created due to trademark complications involving the Montecristo name in Mexico. Like La Escepción in Italy, the Edmundo Dantes line existed almost entirely within the regional edition ecosystem rather than as an active global Habanos brand.

With the Selectos Reales, Italy once again reinforces its reputation as one of the most innovative and collector-focused markets within the world of Cuban cigars, while continuing to preserve one of Cuba’s most historically intriguing dormant marques.
